On Newsstands Now -- The American Prospect's Special Report: The Politics of Mental Illness
With our jails and prisons serving as the default institutions for housing and treating many of those suffering from mental illness, how much longer can we brush aside the issue of inadequate funding for and access to mental health services? This special report, funded by The California Endowment and a number of other foundations, examines the issue of mental health from various perspectives, including that of Pete Earley, former Washington Post reporter and author of CRAZY: A Father's Search Through America's Mental Health Madness, which was a finalist for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in nonfiction.

Limited-English Proficient Californians share their communication challenges when accessing health care services
In an effort to associate actual Limited-English Proficient people, their faces, their lives, and their communication barriers to the issue of language access, PALS for Health has compiled a book of patient stories, In the Absence of Words. Here you will read the narratives of those who struggle with the English language and have experienced medical complications and difficulties due to the lack of health care interpreters. In the Absence of Words’ main intention is to educate and raise awareness about the language barrier in health care by presenting individual narratives of challenges and successes. One key message that the book conveys is that language services in health care are a basic human right. The book can be used to educate community members and leaders, policy makers, health care providers, and community organizations about the importance of medical interpretation. We hope that In the Absence of Words will not only inspire those who read it, but also become a meaningful, community driven advocacy tool.
