The California Endowment reacts to Arizona's Immigration Law SB1070

In his June 24th blog,The California Endowment's president and CEO Robert K. Ross, M.D. announced that The California Endowment is reconsidering its investments in Arizona-based companies in light of that state's new immigration law SB1070 - a law that runs counter to The Endowment's values and mission of improving the health of California's underserved communities. In his blog, he writes "how can we work hard every day to help Californians eliminate the inequalities they face.using money we made from supporting inequality?" A letter was sent to the CEOs of the Arizona-based companies with which The Endowment has investments putting them on notice that the foundation is considering divesting itself of all its investments in Arizona.

A dynamic, user-friendly online toolkit about the process of transforming small corner stores to carry healthier food choices

Many of California's poorest communities are "food deserts" - places where healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables aren't very accessible, if at all. While most of us take our grocery stores for granted, poor communities often have to rely on the corner liguor/deli mart to feed their families. Unfortunately, most of these liquor/deli marts are stocked only with snack food, sodas, alcoholic beverages and a limited selection of canned goods, frozen foods and dairy products - making it difficult for low-income families to ensure their children are getting the nutrition they need to thrive.

Since type-2 diabetes and obesity prevalence are much higher in California's low-income communities, youth in California have decided to do something about their "food deserts." They're working with the owners of their local corner stores to bring in fresh fruits and vegetables.

Market Makeovers is an outgrowth of The California Endowment's Healthy Eating, Active Communities initiative.
