Actor Robert Downey, Jr. and The California Endowment's Senior Vice President Daniel Zingale in the state capital to meet with legislators about prison reform on January 21, 2010

Prison reform has and continues to be a major issue in California. Due to state budget shortfalls, funding for prisoner re-entry and rehabilitation programs is scarce. Re-entry and rehabilitation programs are key to keeping prisoner recidivism rates down. California's recidivism rate is 70 percent. On January 21, 2010, The California Endomwent's Senior Vice President Daniel Zingale and Actor Robert Downey, Jr. met with State Senators Mark Leno and Abel Maldanado, Assembly Majority Leader Alberto Torrico and key governor's staff -- all important players in the area of prison reform and re-entry.

A dynamic, user-friendly online toolkit about the process of transforming small corner stores to carry healthier food choices

Many of California's poorest communities are "food deserts" - places where healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables aren't very accessible, if at all. While most of us take our grocery stores for granted, poor communities often have to rely on the corner liguor/deli mart to feed their families. Unfortunately, most of these liquor/deli marts are stocked only with snack food, sodas, alcoholic beverages and a limited selection of canned goods, frozen foods and dairy products - making it difficult for low-income families to ensure their children are getting the nutrition they need to thrive.

Since type-2 diabetes and obesity prevalence are much higher in California's low-income communities, youth in California have decided to do something about their "food deserts." They're working with the owners of their local corner stores to bring in fresh fruits and vegetables.

Market Makeovers is an outgrowth of The California Endowment's Healthy Eating, Active Communities initiative.
