Torture survivors need more help from California

Involving local health departments in Community Health Partnerships

This paper co-authored by Senior Program Officer George Flores, MD, MPH, presents findings and lessons learned from the Partnership for the Public's Health (PPH), a comprehensive community initiative that featured a central role for local health departments. Funded by The California Endowment, PPH provided technical and financial resources to 39 community partnerships in 14 local health department jurisdictions to promote community and health department capacity building and community-level policy and systems change designed to produce long-term improvements in population health.

New Commission to Help Youth Renounce Gang Life

The city of San Diego announced the creation of the Commission on Gang Prevention and Intervention, a group made of lawmakers, law enforcement officials, community leaders and former gang members brought together to find solutions for gangs and gang violence. The California Endowment's Steven Eldred, a program officer in the Community Health and the Elimination of Health Disparities program area, was named to the commission.
