The list of 15 specific executive actions complete the fitness icon’s track record in promoting the health and well-being of Californians for years to come."

"Of all the things I’m grateful for this holiday season, none is more important than the opportunity to help make a difference in the lives of Californians. I’m thankful not only to The California Endowment but to the thousands of volunteers and community organizers we support in all corners of our state.

"I can hardly believe it’s been seven years since we recruited local advocates to launch Healthy Eating, Active Communities (HEAC), a new program that sought to prevent obesity by making local environments healthier."

“Coachella Valley, one of 14 Building Healthy Communities (BHC), recently completed their 3-year implementation plan for improving local health—a definite cause for celebration!

“However, on a recent trip there I had an eye-opening experience that reminded me why The California Endowment launched its 10-year plan to help reverse the health inequities these communities live under."

“This past summer, I had the chance to take my one-year old daughter to the park for the first time…How could it be that there are communities just a few blocks away where parents want to bring their children to the local park, but the fear of violence, drugs and racial tensions force them to stay at home during the hot summer nights?"

They were asked to share their views about the role schools can play in promoting health in California. Their statements are published here, completely unedited.

The California Endowment does not support or oppose any candidate for elected office. Whomever you choose to support, please remember to exercise your right to vote.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver announce new name for California’s Food Stamp Program – CalFresh
October 27, 2010
The new name reduces the stigma of food stamps as a welfare program and instead recognizes the importance of focusing on nutrition. More than 3 million Californians currently receive benefits through the Food Stamp Program. With the new name, the hope is to increase participation so every eligible family is enrolled. CalFresh is an important component of obesity prevention in California, as it allows families to purchase nutritious food to feed their children.

Californians Celebrate New Health Law as Benefits Become Real
October 17, 2010
Maria Ambriz didn’t think she’d see her 5-year-old son Silverio walk any time soon. That’s because he has spinal bifida and the family’s health insurance wouldn’t cover the orthopedic shoes he needed. But under the new health care law, officially launched on September 23rd, insurers can’t deny coverage to children with health problems--which means the Moreno Valley mother may get to see her son walk after all.

2010 California County Scorecard of Children's Well-Being
September 30, 2010
The new 2010 California County Scorecard of Children's Well-Being measures 26 core components of child well-being across California's 58 counties and provides a visual fingerprint for each county's results, showing no two places are alike in terms of the condition of their children. To support the discovery of best practices among similar counties, the Scorecard groups data for every indicator by county population density and per capita income. An accompanying online discussion group encourages knowledge sharing.

Robert's Blog:  Get Covered on
September 23rd
September 20, 2010
What's so important about September 23rd? Well, it's the day when the new health care law kicks in for anyone 26 or younger to get coverage like they’ve never had before. On Sept. 23rd, a provision of the Affordable Care Act, which allows young adults to stay on their parents’ insurance until they are 26 years old, becomes law. On that day approximately 2 million young Americans will gain the security and peace of mind that comes with getting covered.

The California Endowment is launching GetCoveredCA, a social media campaign to explain what the law covers and how to get the most out of it, and you have the power to make this campaign contagious.
